Successful Development of Medical AI to Diagnose Probability of Heart Failure from X-ray Images

A joint research project between the University of Tokushima and Teikyo University has succeeded in developing an artificial intelligence (AI) that can calculate the probability of heart failure from simple chest X-ray images and estimate the pathophysiology and prognosis with greater accuracy than a medical specialist. The results of this research were published in the international English-language journal Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine on May 19, 2023, as a result of research conducted at the University of Tokushima by a representative of the Company.

The number of heart failure patients is rapidly increasing due to ischemic heart disease caused by the westernization of lifestyles and the increase in hypertension and valvular heart disease caused by the aging of the population. The successfully developed medical AI has learned the chest X-ray images of 900 patients suspected of having heart failure and the results of detailed catheter-based examinations. It analyzes chest X-ray images of patients and quantifies the probability of heart failure from 0% to 100% in approximately 20 seconds.

It has become clear that the chest X-ray image, which is widely used for medical examinations and other purposes, can predict the severity and prognosis of heart failure. We will continue our clinical research for practical application, to utilize this technology in areas where there is a shortage of doctors and specialists.
